As of yesterday, 1630 hrs IST, I am a proud owner of a 250 GB internal HDD customized to behave like an external HDD !!!This is where we beat the Americans Hands down. The usual external Hard Disk comes with a USB 2.0 compatibility with a 16 MB buffer for the Hard Disk.Of course, the speed of transaction is restricted to the USB. The Indians came up with a better Idea. They came up with a casing for the internal HDD, which then acts like an external Hard Disk. The cost is more affordable for an internal HDD and what more the speed is guaranteed to be at least as much as that of the USB drive...
Enough of the introduction. I made up my mind to purchase one and after inquiry found that a
Guju colleague of mine wanted to buy one too. I was happy not because I would get a good deal if i buy two pieces , but because a Guju colleague was buying with me !! We went to the SP road and asked at the first Shop. The shop keeper candidly asked "
SATA" or "ID". I went "Huh?". He began to explain me, "SATA" HDD has an internal buffer of 8 MB and an "ID" HDD has 2MB. For the gyan he gave us, we think he could have easily replace our college professors. I asked the price difference and he said the difference was only 100 Rs. We were all glad that were intelligent enough to ask the price and that we beat the system to get an awesome configuration for the same price. You would think we did it, but the surprise was yet to come.... when we asked for the casing. The SATA casing costed 1000 Rs and the ID casing cost 500 Rs. My Guju colleague who goes bonker for every 10 Rs, went bonkers 50 times, mathematically.. ( bad one..) . He was still not happy with the price. We went looking for a remote corner shop which does not do a good business hoping that we can get a better price. He took me to a shop far away from the street in a building on the first floor. The shopkeeper there was a
Mallu trying to speak Hindi... arghhhh... We bettered the price by 60 Rs. My guju colleague was happy, we bought our internal-but external-HDD and left SP road. On the way, we stopped at Adiga's to relish good food and to feel happy that we bargained for the BEST deal at SP Road.
I was a bit worried with the HDD and was wondering if the HDD would actually work. After coming home, I formatted the disk and started dumping in data. The HDD was smooth and worked well. The whole shopping experience, all fell into place, my Gujju friend and the HDD both qualify as Smooth operators...
